Excitement is building in Abia State as 14 countries have arrived in Umuahia for the first-ever International Para-Badminton Championship and the All-African Badminton Championship. The twin events are scheduled to hold from September 30 to October 12, 2025.

Countries participating include Brazil, India, Peru, Cameroon, Benin Republic, Tunisia, Mauritius, Rwanda, Egypt, Zimbabwe, and others.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday, the Abia State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Nwobilor Ananaba, confirmed that preparations are in top gear. Represented by the Governor’s Special Assistant on Sports, Raymond Chima Ukwa, the commissioner said the government is fully ready to host the international community.

Over 150 international athletes and 60 officials are expected to participate. The state has reportedly installed world-class playing mats and equipment to ensure a fair and professional competition. Security and hospitality measures have also been put in place to give athletes and officials a safe, welcoming environment.

The President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), Francis Orbih, commended Abia State for hosting the historic event, assuring that arrangements had been finalized to deliver a successful championship. He also expressed gratitude to Governor Alex Otti for supporting sports development and placing Nigeria on the global badminton map.

Also present were Jeff Shigoli, CEO of the Badminton Confederation Africa (BCA), and Dr Ahmed Reda, Head of Operations and Badminton World Federation (BWF) International Classifier, who both applauded Nigeria’s efforts. They noted that the tournament places Nigeria among the very few African countries and the third overall  to host international para-badminton activities.

Sports enthusiasts are hopeful that this championship will not only boost Nigeria’s reputation in global badminton but also inspire more inclusion, participation, and recognition for para-athletes across Africa.
