A tragic incident has occurred in Kasuwan Garba, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State, where a female food seller, simply identified as Ammaye, was lynched by an angry mob over alleged blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad.
According to eyewitnesses, the confrontation began in a nearby community, Igwama, where Ammaye, who was well known in the area as a food vendor, reportedly exchanged words with a young man said to be her nephew. The young man was said to have jokingly told her that he wished to marry her to “fulfil the Sunnah.” In response, Ammaye allegedly made comments considered blasphemous by locals.
The matter was reported to the palace of the District Head of Kasuwan Garba, where Ammaye was interrogated. Witnesses said she repeated the remarks in question, which further angered community members.
The District Head then handed her over to security operatives for further investigation. However, the situation escalated when a mob of youths insisted on immediate punishment. Despite attempts by the security personnel to shield her, the crowd overpowered them, stoning Ammaye to death.
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Mariga Local Government, Abbas Adamu, said calm has since been restored to the area.
The tragic development has once again raised concerns about mob justice, religious intolerance, and the inability of security forces to prevent extrajudicial killings in parts of Nigeria.
