Authorities in northern Italy have launched a murder investigation after the dismembered body of a 35-year-old man, Alessandro Venier, was discovered in a rubbish bin at his family home. He was allegedly killed by his own mother and girlfriend, who have both been arrested.
According to Italian media reports, Venier was sedated and then hacked into pieces with an axe before his remains were buried in quicklime in an attempt to conceal the crime. The horrific act is believed to have occurred several days before police uncovered the body on Thursday.
Venier lived in the same household with his 61-year-old mother, Lorena Venier, a nurse, and his 30-year-old Colombian partner, with whom he shared a six-month-old daughter. Authorities say the pair allegedly conspired to murder Venier while living under the same roof.
The crime came to light after one of the two women reportedly alerted authorities, leading police to the gruesome discovery. Both suspects were arrested at the scene and are currently being held in custody for questioning. A post-mortem examination is under way to determine the exact cause and time of death.
So far, no clear motive has been established, though investigators are exploring all angles, including family tensions. It is believed that Venier had recently expressed interest in moving to Colombia with his partner and their child, which may have led to conflict.
The couple’s infant daughter has been taken into care, with local social services ensuring her welfare in the wake of the tragedy.
The case has sent shockwaves through the quiet town of Gemona del Friuli, located near Udine in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
“It’s a terrible thing, it’s heart-wrenching. Nothing like this has ever happened here before,” said Mayor Roberto Revelant, adding that the community is rallying around the child.
Neighbours expressed disbelief, particularly over the alleged involvement of Lorena Venier, who was known as a kind and respected figure in the area due to her work in healthcare.
Formal charges are expected to be filed in the coming days as investigators continue to piece together the events leading to the murder.
