Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has declared that he will not publicly criticize or give an opinion on matters concerning his ex-principal, former President Goodluck Jonathan, amid growing calls for the latter to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Friday, Omokri described his deep and personal bond with Jonathan, noting that his loyalty to the former president goes beyond politics. According to him, Jonathan once visited him in California, where he stayed for 10 days with his family a gesture Omokri says cemented his respect and unconditional love for the ex-president.
“I have an unconditional love for President Jonathan and so I will not criticise or give an opinion on anything he does on live television. This is a man who came to California and spent ten days with me and my family,” Omokri said.
Jonathan served as Nigeria’s president between 2010 and 2015, first completing the tenure of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua before winning the 2011 election. He lost his re-election bid in 2015 to Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ten years after leaving office, however, Jonathan continues to be a subject of political speculation. Calls for his return in 2027 have intensified, particularly within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Several chieftains of the party are said to be wooing him to rejoin and possibly lead the PDP into the next presidential race.
On Thursday, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, who also chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum, said the party’s doors remain open for Jonathan. He praised the former president as one of Nigeria’s “most celebrated politicians today” and insisted that he would be a strong candidate if he decided to run.
While Jonathan has yet to make any public declaration regarding 2027, political observers believe his entry into the race could reshape the dynamics of the contest, both within the PDP and on the national stage.
