A Florida man is being hailed as a local hero after he stopped a burglary suspect — while wearing Batman pajamas.
Police say Kyle Myvett confronted and detained 20-year-old Justin Schimpl after spotting him breaking into vehicles and a neighbor’s garage in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
According to officials, Myvett was asleep when his home security cameras alerted him around 2:00 a.m. that someone was breaking into his truck. Still dressed in a Batman onesie, he went outside and saw Schimpl rummaging through his vehicle.
Police reported that Myvett then found the suspect in his neighbor’s garage, where he grabbed hold of him and kept him restrained until officers arrived.
“I grabbed a hold of their shirt and their right wrist, and I said, ‘Listen, don’t try to get away,’” Myvett told WBBH.
Investigators said Schimpl had stolen multiple items, including cash, a woman’s wristlet, more than $500 in gift cards, and two pairs of Ray-Ban sunglasses valued at $300 each.
Cape Coral police credited Myvett for his quick actions, noting that burglary suspects often target unlocked vehicles. Myvett admitted he had left his pickup unlocked, assuming the neighborhood was quiet, but said he was glad he acted when he did.
“I don’t have a Superman pajama because he’s kind of — if you’re impervious and invincible, you’re not really brave,” Myvett joked, earning him the nickname of a “contractor by day, hero at night.”
Schimpl, who police say is known to law enforcement from prior investigations, was arrested and charged with:
- Two counts of burglary of an unoccupied vehicle
- Two counts of petit theft under $750
- One count of burglary of an occupied dwelling
Authorities said Schimpl initially claimed another person was with him, but gave inconsistent names, and no other suspects were found in the area.
Schimpl’s first court appearance is scheduled for September 29.
