There is palpable tension in Abraka Community, Ethiope-East Local Government Area of Delta State, after a tragic incident on Saturday evening in which a pregnant woman was allegedly shot dead by soldiers.
Eyewitnesses said the soldiers, attached to Operation Delta Sweep, had flagged down a vehicle carrying suspected internet fraudsters, popularly known as “Yahoo boys.” However, the suspects reportedly refused to stop and sped off.
In response, the soldiers gave chase and allegedly opened fire in the process. During the sporadic shooting, a stray bullet struck a pregnant woman who was said to be going about her normal activities.
The woman reportedly died on the spot before any medical help could reach her. Her sudden death triggered immediate anger within the community, as residents, indigenes, and students took to the streets in protest. The demonstrations were said to have disrupted activities in the area as people demanded justice for the slain woman.
As of the time of filing this report, security operatives have not released an official statement on the incident. Meanwhile, community members are calling for a thorough investigation and accountability to prevent a repeat of such tragedies.
