Tension gripped Navtola Dhansuri village in Araria district, Bihar, after two violent incidents claimed the lives of two men within 24 hours, in what police suspect is a property dispute turned deadly.
According to reports, 35-year-old Jai Kumar Yadav was allegedly shot dead in his sleep late on Friday night. Following his killing, enraged family members and relatives stormed the house of the alleged accused, Nayan Yadav, and set it ablaze in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The fire destroyed the property and two motorcycles parked nearby. During the inferno, Nayan’s charred body was later recovered from the rubble and sent for autopsy.
Speaking to reporters, Araria Superintendent of Police, Anjani Kumar, said investigators are still trying to establish the exact circumstances of Nayan’s death.
“We can’t say right now whether Nayan was burnt alive or if he was thrown into the flames after being killed. Forensic experts have collected evidence from the site. Prima facie, it appears to be a case of a property dispute; however, a probe is underway,” SP Kumar stated.
Police sources also noted that it has not yet been confirmed whether Nayan was directly responsible for Jai Kumar Yadav’s shooting.
“We cannot say at this stage that the man allegedly burnt alive shot Jai Kumar Yadav. Police will look into the incidents from all possible angles, including the act of retaliation,” an officer said on condition of anonymity.
A local police team was immediately dispatched to the village after the initial killing, with additional reinforcements later deployed to prevent further escalation. However, tensions remain high as most villagers reportedly fled the area soon after the incidents.
Police have launched an investigation and are searching for individuals involved in both the murder and the arson attack.
The double tragedy underscores the growing concern over violent reprisals in local disputes, with authorities warning against mob justice while urging communities to allow investigations to run their course.
