A tragic incident occurred in the Saburi 2 area of Abuja on Wednesday, as a young man identified as Stephen Chidubem reportedly took his own life due to overwhelming gambling debts.
According to eyewitnesses and sources familiar with the situation, Chidubem was found dead in his apartment on Abba Street, located behind the Anglican Church in Saburi 2. He was discovered hanging from a ceiling fan with a rope, in what authorities believe was a case of suicide.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported the body to Kubwa General Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed him dead on arrival. The remains have since been deposited in the hospital's mortuary for autopsy and further investigation.
A suicide note found at the scene reportedly pointed to gambling addiction as the motive behind the tragic act. In the note, Chidubem apologized to individuals he owed money and those affected by his financial troubles.
Part of the note read:
“Sorry to everyone who cared, I can’t continue putting people in trouble because of my gambling addiction. Please forgive me Elvis, Paul, and all I’m owing. And you, Bishop Andy Ero, give the balance of ₦507,500 to Elvis or Paul.”
Sources revealed that the deceased had been battling a long-term gambling problem that had plunged him into deep debt and emotional distress.
Authorities are urging individuals facing financial or emotional crises to seek help and are calling for greater public awareness on the risks of gambling addiction and its impact on mental health.
