The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) is in mourning following the tragic death of Miss Oluchi Okoh, a 22-year-old 300-level Economics student, who lost her life in a fatal road accident in downtown Port Harcourt.
According to a statement released by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Owunari Georgewill, the accident occurred when a reckless commercial bus driver collided with a stationary lorry. Several passengers were killed in the crash, including Miss Okoh, who died from the severe injuries she sustained.
“Gone too soon; sunset at noon,” Prof. Georgewill lamented. “The University of Port Harcourt mourns the passing of our 300-level student of Economics. A reckless driver in downtown Port Harcourt rammed his commercial bus into a stationary lorry, killing some of the passengers. At the end of rescue operations, Miss Oluchi Okoh, a 22-year-old female student of the University of Port Harcourt, lay dead in a pool of blood from severe injuries sustained in the accident.”
A candlelight vigil was held on campus in her memory, drawing a solemn crowd of students, staff, and other members of the university community who came together to pay their respects and celebrate her life.
“The University deeply mourns her death and extends heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues. This sudden and irreparable loss is felt deeply across our community,” the Vice Chancellor added. “May the soul of Oluchi rest in perfect peace.”
The university has pledged its support to the bereaved family during this difficult time and emphasized its commitment to promoting safer road practices to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
