Suspect Arrested Over Murder and Mutilation of Pregnant Nurse in Anambra; Human Parts Recovered at Shrine
Police in Anambra State have arrested a 24-year-old suspect in connection with the gruesome murder and mutilation of a pregnant nurse, whose body was discovered in a soakaway pit in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area.
The arrested suspect, identified as Somtochukwu Nwafor, is believed to be the girlfriend of the prime suspect, Chiemerie Obika Elobisi, who remains at large. Police say Nwafor has confessed to participating in the crime and detailed how body parts were harvested and sold to native doctors in the area.
In a statement on Tuesday, Anambra Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the arrest and said further investigation led to a shocking discovery at a local shrine.
“Based on intelligence gathered during interrogation, operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) stormed the shrine of a native doctor, Nwafor Ofornwatadile, located in Itima Amawa Village, Ogbunike, in the early hours of July 29, 2025,” Ikenga stated.
There, police reportedly recovered suspected human body parts concealed in cellophane bags, believed to be linked to the nurse's killing.
The victim, a trained nurse whose identity has not yet been officially released, was allegedly lured to the suspect's residence under the pretense of seeking medical attention. Authorities believe she was killed and mutilated, with parts of her body trafficked for ritualistic purposes.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the act in strong terms, calling it “inhumane, criminal, and an affront to public morality and the sanctity of life.”
He also issued a call to the public: “We urge anyone with credible information that could assist in tracking down the prime suspect and other collaborators to come forward. Your identity will be protected.”
A manhunt is currently underway for Chiemerie Obika Elobisi and any other individuals connected to the case.
The investigation is ongoing, and police say additional arrests may follow as they continue to uncover the extent of the alleged human parts trafficking operation.
