Nigerian singer Speed Darlington has been placed on an international watchlist by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), which says it has also notified Interpol after he allegedly boasted online about having sex with a 15-year-old girl.
Immediate Actions: Watchlist and Interpol Notice
NAPTIP’s Chief Press Officer Vincent Adekoye confirmed on Tuesday that Speed Darlington (real name Darlington Okoye) is now on a procedural notice circulated to:
- Nigeria Immigration Service
- Nigeria Police Force
- Department of State Services
- International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol)
“We have given him ample opportunity to respond,” Adekoye said, adding that the agency will “limit his access to potential victims wherever he may be hiding.”
How the Controversy Began
Instagram Livestream Claims
The uproar started after a May 27 Children’s Day livestream in which the entertainer allegedly claimed he had sex with a 15-year-old—an act that would violate Nigeria’s Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015, and parts of the Cybercrime Act, 2015.
NAPTIP issued a formal invitation for Okoye to appear at its Abuja headquarters on May 30. He ignored that summons, citing prior engagements and proposing June 26 instead. A final deadline of June 2 also passed without compliance.
Singer’s Response
In a TikTok video, Okoye rejected the allegations, insisting “I have not committed any crime” and demanding ₦2.5 million for his “appearance fee” if the agency wanted him to show up. He also accused officials of seeking “social media clout.”
Legal Stakes and Public Backlash
Potential Charges
If the claims are verified, experts say the singer could face charges of rape, child sexual exploitation, and cyberstalking, each carrying penalties ranging from long prison terms to hefty fines.
Human-rights lawyer Funmi Adeoye notes that “cross-border watchlists signal how seriously authorities now treat online admissions of sex crimes.”
UNICEF data show that one in four Nigerian girls and one in ten boys experience sexual violence before age 18, underscoring the urgency for swift enforcement.
Social Media Reaction
Women’s rights groups and child protection advocates have applauded NAPTIP’s move, arguing it sends a powerful message that “confessions, joking or not, have consequences.” Critics however question whether the agency has gathered enough evidence beyond the viral video.
Next Steps: International Cooperation
By involving Interpol, NAPTIP aims to track Okoye’s movements across borders. Under Interpol protocols, member countries can detain a watch-listed individual for questioning and possible extradition.
