The Nigerian social media community has been thrown into mourning following the reported death of popular TikToker Ms. Chinelo, widely known as BigButFit. Known for her vibrant personality and her advocacy for body positivity, Chinelo reportedly passed away during a surgical procedure.
Initial reports suggest that she died while undergoing a tummy-related operation. However, further information indicates the procedure may have been for a hernia. The exact circumstances surrounding the surgery and her death remain unclear as of the time of reporting.
News of her sudden death has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many users expressing sorrow and anger. Some netizens have blamed persistent body-shaming and online bullying for pushing her toward undergoing the procedure. One user commented,
“God forbid, but if what I’m hearing is true, I really hope those who bullied her into doing what she did are happy now.” Another added, “Honestly eh! If you see the way I hate bullies! Don’t know the story behind her death, but can people stop being bullies?”
Her tragic death comes just weeks after another young Nigerian content creator, 21-year-old Christiana Olatunji, also known as Thianahclevs1 on TikTok, was found dead in a gutter in Lokoja, Kogi State. Christiana, who hailed from Fehinti-Kabba and lived in Lokoja, was reportedly last seen at a popular lounge with a friend. Following the discovery of her body, her companion was taken in by police for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.
The back-to-back loss of two young female content creators has sparked renewed conversations online about the pressures of social media, the dangers of cyberbullying, and the need for mental health awareness and support systems in Nigeria’s digital space.
As tributes pour in for Ms. Chinelo, many are calling for an end to online harassment and more compassion toward public figures, especially those promoting self-love and body confidence.
