The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the detention of a police corporal following the accidental shooting and death of a 26-year-old man, Amani Mubarak, during an altercation in the Komu area of the state.
According to police sources, the incident occurred at approximately 7:50 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, near Abuja Leather Company, located along Ajetiroad. The officer involved, identified as Corporal Rasaq Mumuni, was reportedly stationed at a pin-down point in the area and was called to mediate a dispute involving several individuals.
During the intervention, one of the parties allegedly attempted to disarm the officer, leading to the accidental discharge of his firearm. The bullet struck Mubarak in the right buttock.
The victim was rushed to the Baptist Medical Centre in Saki for emergency treatment. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 30, after efforts to save his life were unsuccessful.
In a statement issued by the police, the command confirmed that Corporal Mumuni has been taken into custody as investigations continue. The incident has prompted internal disciplinary proceedings, and authorities have assured the public that the case will be handled transparently.
The tragic event has sparked fresh concerns over the use of firearms by security personnel, as well as the protocols for conflict de-escalation during public disputes.
Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
