A woman was reportedly beaten by a mob at Polly Junction in Enugu State after allegedly attempting to abduct a baby, according to a viral video circulating on social media.
The footage, shared by a user identified as @ChuksEricE on X (formerly Twitter), shows the woman being confronted by a crowd. In one clip, her face is clearly visible as she speaks, while another disturbing segment shows her being physically assaulted by bystanders. She is heard crying out for help, with visible injuries on her body.
The alleged incident, which has not yet been confirmed by the Enugu State Police Command, has drawn widespread attention online. It has also reignited debate over the rise of mob justice, or "jungle justice", in Nigeria, where suspects are often attacked or killed without trial.
Several users reacted strongly under the original post:
@JanisOmorogbe wrote: “By all means, I condemn jungle justice.”
@ApstFreedom added: “Jungle justice is not the solution. Please call the police or take her to them so that this issue can be handled.”
@Faithysia_blunt commented: “The guts to steal someone’s child. You have to be the most wicked and callous human being. She deserves worst to happen to her.”
Some other commenters criticized the vigilante response while others defended it, underscoring the public's mistrust in formal justice systems.
As of this report, no official police statement has been released, and the identity of the woman and the circumstances surrounding the alleged attempted abduction remain unclear.
Legal and human rights advocates continue to urge the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands, emphasizing the need for due process and the dangers of wrongful accusations.
