Musician and filmmaker Abdulrasheed Bello, popularly known as Skillz or JJC Skillz, has opened up about the emotional challenges he faced as a teenager following the death of his father.
In a candid interview on Live with Lynda, the award-winning artist shared how losing his father at just 14 years old became a pivotal moment in his life.
“I was born in Kano. At the age of 14, my dad passed away, so my sister adopted me and then she took me to England,” JJC revealed.
Despite the opportunity to start a new life abroad, the move wasn’t as exciting as it seemed. According to JJC, leaving behind the familiarity of Kano and his childhood dreams was deeply painful.
“I was quite heartbroken when my family took me to England. We were in a boring place and there was no fun,” he admitted.
Before relocating, JJC described a vibrant childhood filled with music and creativity, recalling how he and his friends would create makeshift instruments from milk cans to entertain their neighbors.
“I was one of those boys in Kano that wanted to become a musician. Me and my friends used to turn milk cans into instruments, go door to door and be singing for people.”
While the transition to the UK was difficult, JJC Skillz eventually found his path and built a successful career as both a musician and a filmmaker. His story is a testament to resilience, showing how loss and change can sometimes become the very fuel for one’s purpose.
