Friends and loved ones of the late Bimbo Ogbonna, wife of celebrity auto dealer Ikechukwu Ogbonna, popularly known as IVD, gathered on July 23 to celebrate her posthumous birthday amid ongoing controversy surrounding her tragic death.
Bimbo died in October 2022 after sustaining severe burns during a domestic altercation with her husband at their home in Megamound Estate, Lekki, Lagos. Her passing prompted widespread public outrage and a police investigation into the circumstances of her death.
At the time, her sister publicly accused IVD of being responsible, igniting a firestorm of debate across social media. The couple, who shared several children, had reportedly endured a volatile relationship, with previous reports of abuse.
On what would have been her birthday, Bimbo’s friends came together to pay tribute to her memory, sharing emotional messages and calling for justice. In heartfelt speeches and social media posts, they remembered her as vibrant and full of life, while strongly refuting claims circulating online regarding the nature of her death.
“She loved life so much, and I’m convinced she could not have taken her own life,” one close friend said during the event. “Whoever did this will not go scot-free.”
Another friend, identified only as Doyin, was praised for organizing the gathering. One speaker specifically mentioned “Mama Jazz,” Bimbo’s sister, as someone who did everything possible to support her, including helping her move out of the couple’s home and securing a separate apartment in Abuja.
Social media reactions to the remembrance were deeply emotional, with users reflecting on the dangers of remaining in abusive relationships and the societal pressure women face to uphold broken marriages. While some expressed sorrow and solidarity, others issued strong warnings and life lessons drawn from the tragedy.
“Never build your entire life around any man or woman to the point where you lose your identity. When you’re gone, you’ll simply become a closed chapter,” wrote one user.
“In all you do in this life, don’t die for rubbish reasons,” added another.
The remembrance comes as legal and public scrutiny around IVD’s role in the incident continues, though no official conviction has been made. The case remains open as authorities proceed with investigations.
As calls for justice persist, Bimbo’s death has continued to serve as a somber reminder of the consequences of domestic violence and the need for stronger support systems for vulnerable women.
