A Florida mother has been charged with first-degree murder after allegedly killing her seven-year-old daughter with a single punch to the abdomen, following prior concerns raised to child protection authorities.
Naikishia L. Williams, 32, was arrested on Friday, June 27, after a two-month investigation by the Riviera Beach Police Department into the death of her daughter, Nia Williams. The incident reportedly occurred on April 28, when police responded to a call regarding an unresponsive child at a residence on West 15th Street in Riviera Beach at 8:01 p.m.
Nia was transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center but was later pronounced dead. An autopsy revealed the cause of death as blunt force trauma to the abdomen, including a lacerated liver and internal bleeding.
Williams is accused of delivering a fatal blow to her daughter’s stomach. A grand jury indictment was issued on Thursday, June 26, leading to her arrest the following morning. In addition to the murder charge, she also faces a charge of aggravated child abuse. At her initial court appearance, a judge ordered that Williams be held without bail.
Under Florida law, a conviction for first-degree murder carries the possibility of the death penalty or life imprisonment without parole. Prosecutors must prove the crime was committed with premeditated intent.
Riviera Beach Police Chief Michael Coleman expressed grief over the incident, saying the loss had deeply affected the department and the wider community.
“The death of an innocent child is never normal,” said Chief Coleman. “It’s hard for us to even fathom. The community has been traumatised. My department has been traumatised.”
Nia's former caretaker, Rebecca Finley, and godmother, Whytni Walker, spoke with local media following the arrest. Finley described Nia as a “fashionista” with a “golden” personality, while Walker said, “We can never get her smile back. We can never talk to her again.”
Both women are listed as witnesses in the police case file. They also confirmed that Williams’ three remaining children are now in the custody of other family members.
Williams is scheduled to appear in court again on July 28, 2025, as the case continues to unfold.
