Political commentator and former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has publicly criticized Peter Obi, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate and former governor of Anambra State, over his silence following the abduction and murder of Ifesinachi Onyekere, popularly known as Fish Magnet.
Onyekere, a prominent entrepreneur and social media influencer known for his seafood business, was reportedly abducted by unknown gunmen in Anambra State and later confirmed dead. His killing has sparked widespread outrage and mourning across social media platforms, with prominent voices including controversial online personality Verydarkman expressing grief and demanding justice.
In a post on his verified social media account, Omokri questioned why Obi — who hails from the same state as the late Onyekere — had not made a public statement on the incident.
“This is Ifesinachi Onyekere, popularly known as Fish Magnet, a promising young entrepreneur from Anambra State… But how come Peter Obi, who is from Anambra State, like the late Mr. Onyekere, has not said anything? Isn’t that strange?” Omokri wrote.
Omokri went on to accuse Obi of “selective outrage”, claiming the ex-governor is quick to condemn tragedies in other parts of Nigeria but often remains silent on similar incidents in the Southeast.
“The Peter Obi we know is never shy about jumping onto trending issues like this, as long as they occur outside Igboland,” he added, referencing Obi’s past comments on events such as the Ibadan stampede, the killing of Deborah Samuel, and attacks in Uromi.
The former aide also criticized Obi for allegedly spreading misinformation regarding national economic policy, while staying silent on security issues closer to home.
“Yesterday, he lied about the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF)... However, Peter Obi is reluctant to comment on tragedies in the Southeast.”
Omokri concluded his post by accusing Obi of tribal bias, stating:
“That is Peter Obi’s regular trademark. If it happens in Igboland, Obi will suddenly become deaf, dumb, and blind... Or am I lying?”
As of the time of this report, Peter Obi has not issued any public statement regarding the death of Ifesinachi Onyekere.
Onyekere’s death adds to growing concerns over security challenges in parts of the Southeast, where abductions and violent crimes have been on the rise.
Investigation into the killing is ongoing
