Former senator and 2023 Kogi State governorship candidate, Dino Melaye, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s failure to offer a credible alternative to Nigeria’s deepening political challenges.
In a resignation letter dated July 4 and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ward 1 in Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Melaye declared his immediate withdrawal from the party and its activities.
“This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation,” he wrote.
Melaye, a former member of the National Assembly and prominent political figure in Kogi State, stated that his decision followed deep reflection and a growing disillusionment with the PDP’s direction. He emphasized that he could no longer, “in good conscience,” continue to support or participate in the party’s affairs.
The resignation comes amid broader internal struggles within the PDP and follows a similar move by Melaye’s political ally, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who also recently left the party.
While neither Melaye nor Atiku has formally announced their next political affiliation, sources close to both men suggest they may be considering a move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signaling possible realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
As of the time of reporting, the PDP has not issued an official response to Melaye’s resignation.
