Shanteari Young, a daycare owner from Baltimore County, Maryland, has been released from prison after serving most of a four-year sentence for shooting her ex-husband, James Weems Jr., a retired Baltimore City police officer. The incident occurred in July 2022 at a Washington, D.C. hotel, where Young confronted Weems about allegations of child abuse involving kids at her daycare, Lil Kidz Kastle in Owings Mills.
Weems was later convicted in 2024 of rape and sexual abuse involving a 10-year-old girl, one of the victims he abused inside the daycare van. He was sentenced to life in prison. Young testified against him during the trial but was not allowed to tell the jury about the shooting incident. Young's sentence was twice what prosecutors recommended, sparking backlash from supporters who felt the punishment was excessive.
Young is now staying at a halfway house in Washington, D.C., working to rebuild her life. She expressed gratitude for the support she received from people following the case, saying it "really helped me get through my prison sentence." Young is focused on rebuilding her life and returning to Maryland, where she hopes to continue raising awareness about child sexual abuse and supporting her community.
Young emphasized the importance of bringing awareness to child predators, stating, "It's a good thing that we're able to start helping children and bring more awareness to sexual predators who are out there, even those that have on the blue uniform or are within certain areas where we would've assumed that these people wouldn't have done anything." She plans to continue her work in this area, giving back to the community like she did before.
As Young rebuilds her life, she'll likely remain under home confinement until her sentence ends in December 2025. Will her experience inspire change in the way we approach child abuse cases and support those who take a stand against it?
