The Kwara State High Court in Ilorin has sentenced Abdulrahman Bello to death by hanging for the brutal murder of Hafsoh Lawal, a final-year student of the College of Education, Ilorin.
Delivering judgment on Thursday, Justice Hannah Ajayi described the killing as a “cruel and wicked” act motivated by ritual purposes and the illicit trade in human body parts.
“The confession of love and plans to marry her were concocted lies to lure the victim to his residence,” the judge said. “The killing was cruel, wicked, and an extreme display of human wickedness.”
Bello was convicted after the court found overwhelming evidence linking him to the gruesome crime, which occurred on February 10, 2025, in the Olunlade area of Ilorin.
According to the prosecution, Bello invited Hafsoh, his girlfriend, to his home under false pretenses. He then had sexual intercourse with her before murdering and dismembering her body.
Police investigations revealed chilling details. During Bello's arrest, officers recovered:
- The victim’s severed palm
- A bottle containing human blood
- Her personal belongings
- A cutlass believed to have been used in the mutilation
Additional decomposed body parts were later discovered at a nearby dumpsite in Ilorin.
Four other suspects — Ahmed Abdulwasiu, Jamiu Uthman, Suleiman Muyideen, and Abdulrahman Jamiu — were discharged and acquitted due to lack of evidence linking them directly to the crime.
Justice Ajayi's judgment brings a measure of closure to a case that has shocked the Ilorin community and sparked outrage across Nigeria.
