Mrs. Blessing Nwaka, a 37-year-old woman brutally set ablaze by her husband, Obiozor Nwaka, was laid to rest on June 27, 2025, in Abagana, Anambra State. The burial ceremony was held under a heavy atmosphere of anguish, with many still reeling from the horror and senselessness of her tragic death.
The shocking incident occurred on January 21, 2025, when Obiozor Nwaka poured fuel on his wife and set her ablaze over a minor family dispute. A graphic video circulated on social media showed the victim fleeing for safety, suffering from third-degree burns on her torso and other parts of her body. Despite efforts to extinguish the flames, Blessing sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead at a medical facility in Enugwu-Ukwu.
The community came together to mourn the loss of Blessing Nwaka, with family, friends, and sympathizers gathering to pay their final respects. The President General of the Oraifite Improvement Union, Sir Vin Dike, issued a passionate plea for peace and justice, urging the judicial system to act swiftly and decisively.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, with human rights activists and civil society groups reiterating the urgent need for better protection of women and harsher penalties for perpetrators of domestic abuse. Women from across Anambra State have also protested, demanding justice for Blessing Nwaka and an end to domestic violence.
