The body of Maria Denisa Paun, a 30-year-old Romanian national, has been discovered beheaded and stuffed inside a suitcase near an abandoned farmhouse in Montecatini Terme, Italy. Paun had been missing since May 15 after vanishing from her home in Prato, Tuscany. The discovery was made nearly three weeks later, shocking residents of Tuscany and gaining national attention.
Authorities say Vasile Frumuzache, a 32-year-old Romanian national and local security guard, confessed to the murder. He allegedly admitted to strangling Paun, beheading her with a knife, and setting her head on fire using gasoline before concealing her body in a garbage bag and suitcase. Frumuzache told investigators he had met Paun through a dating app and killed her after she threatened to blackmail him over their encounter.
Surveillance footage from a hotel shows Frumuzache arriving with a black bag and leaving with a white suitcase belonging to Paun. Investigators used GPS data from a device installed in Frumuzache's car to track his movements, leading them to the secluded farmhouse where Paun's body was recovered.
The murder has brought widespread shock and speculation, with some initially believing Paun may have been abducted by organized criminals. The discovery of her remains has now brought the mystery to a tragic close.
