A 27-year-old man, Ismail Ahmed, has died after getting trapped in an abandoned mining pit while seeking shelter from a heavy rainstorm in Pangu Village, Kwali Area Council, Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The incident occurred on Saturday, and the details were shared on Sunday by security analyst Zagazola Makama.
According to Makama, Ahmed was washing clothes by a nearby stream when the rain started pouring down. In an attempt to escape the downpour, he took shelter in a disused mining pit that was once used by illegal gold miners. Unfortunately, the loose soil around the pit collapsed due to the rainfall, trapping him inside.
Family members and local people rushed to the site and pulled Ahmed out of the pit. He was immediately taken to Kwali General Hospital, but was declared dead upon arrival. The family later decided not to have an autopsy done and chose to bury him according to Islamic customs.
Following this tragedy, local authorities and residents have warned the community to stay away from abandoned mining pits and other dangerous places, especially during the rainy season. This incident highlights the dangers of abandoned mining areas, especially when heavy rains cause soil to become unstable and collapse.
