A heartbreaking incident of violence has led to the sentencing of two teenagers for the murder of 23-year-old Abdul Jalloh in East London. Shamiah McKenzie, 18, and Codee Godfrey, 19, were found guilty of their roles in the brutal stabbing, which occurred on August 5, 2024, on New Union Close, E14.
CCTV footage revealed that McKenzie and Godfrey had stalked their victim, circling the Isle of Dogs on bicycles for over an hour before ambushing Jalloh at 4:15 PM. Despite paramedics' desperate efforts, Jalloh succumbed to a fatal neck wound. The investigation was fueled by brave community members providing footage, which sealed the duo's fate.
On June 20, 2025, McKenzie was sentenced to at least 22 years behind bars for murder, while Godfrey faces nine years for manslaughter. Detective Chief Inspector Paul Waller praised the community's courage and the officers' relentless evidence-gathering, ensuring justice for Jalloh's grieving loved ones.
The attack was described as callous and highlighted the devastating toll of knife crime. Waller stated that London is safer with these killers off the streets. The meticulous investigation and subsequent sentencing serve as a testament to the commitment of law enforcement to bring perpetrators to justice.
The sentencing of McKenzie and Godfrey brings closure to Jalloh's family and friends. However, it also raises questions about the root causes of knife crime and the need for continued efforts to prevent such tragedies.
