Armed Militia Ambush Leaves Two Civilians Dead in Northern Galkayo
The victims—Sa’id Gurre Ali Baar Hoosh and Anab Burhaan Mohamed Ali, a young woman—were reportedly traveling together in a private vehicle when they were intercepted and fatally shot at close range. Witnesses said the shooting happened around 9:30 PM, between Beerta Bilan and the Tawakal IDP Camp, an area that has seen previous security incidents.
Victims Were Ambushed While Traveling
According to local sources, the attackers were heavily armed and appeared to have laid in wait for the victims. Gunfire erupted without warning, and both individuals were declared dead at the scene. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and the perpetrators fled immediately after carrying out the killings.
Local residents described the victims as “well-respected individuals,” though further details about Sa’id’s background remain unverified. Anab Burhaan Mohamed Ali was known to be a civilian with no ties to politics or armed groups.
Possible Motive: Clan-Related Revenge Attacks
Although no official motive has been confirmed, analysts and residents suspect the attack may be tied to long-standing clan rivalries. Galkayo has historically been divided along clan lines, and similar killings in the past have been part of a pattern of retaliatory violence.
“Galkayo has long been a flashpoint for clan conflicts, and targeted assassinations like this are unfortunately common,” said a Galkayo-based security analyst, who requested anonymity for safety reasons.
The incident adds to growing concern about the persistent fragility of Galkayo’s security, especially in areas under Puntland’s control. While parts of the city have experienced relative calm, the northern outskirts remain vulnerable, particularly during nighttime hours.
Calls for Justice and Preventive Action
So far, neither Puntland’s security forces nor local law enforcement have issued a statement. No arrests have been made, and the lack of immediate response has sparked frustration and fear among residents.
Community leaders and human rights advocates are calling for a swift, transparent investigation to prevent the killings from fueling further violence.
“We are tired of burying our sons and daughters. The government must act now—before more lives are lost,” said one local elder.
The attack has once again underscored the urgent need for stronger security measures, inter-clan reconciliation efforts, and proactive law enforcement to stabilize the region.
