Lagos, Nigeria: Popular Nigerian socialite and businessman Pretty Mike (born Eze Nwalie Nwogu) has revealed that he was sexually abused at age 13, losing his virginity to two female housemaids. In a recent interview he called on parents to safeguard their sons as rigorously as their daughters, stressing that boys often suffer in silence.
A Painful Childhood Memory Comes to Light
Speaking candidly the 37 year old nightlife entrepreneur said the abuse “changed my entire orientation about sex.” While he has chosen to “let it go,” he noted that many children experience such trauma far younger, sometimes as early as six, before they can grasp what is happening.
“Parents always think of their girls first when hiring domestic staff,” he said.
“But the male child is equally vulnerable. There should not be a double standard.”
Boys Face Abuse Too
Studies underscore his point. A UNICEF Nigeria survey in 2015 found that one in six Nigerian boys experiences sexual violence before the age of 18, yet reporting remains low due to stigma and cultural silence. Child protection advocate Dr. Ibukun Aluko tells NewsHub that public testimonies from well known figures can break the culture of secrecy and encourage other survivors to seek help.
A Call for Vigilance
Pretty Mike urged caregivers to:
- Screen domestic workers thoroughly and supervise their interactions with all children.
- Create safe spaces where kids, boys and girls alike, can speak up about discomfort or abuse.
- Seek professional counseling for any child who shows sudden behavioral changes.
No Double Standards, No Excuses
Legal experts note that Nigeria’s Child Rights Act criminalizes sexual exploitation of minors regardless of the perpetrator’s gender. “We need to enforce existing laws and normalize conversations about male victimhood,” says human rights lawyer Funmi Adeoye.
What Next
With more public figures sharing personal stories, will Nigerian families finally treat child protection as gender neutral and will policymakers respond with stronger safeguards.
