A hidden camera exposed a United Kingdom-based Nigerian caregiver, Bilikesu Olagunju, maltreating a frail 88-year-old man, John Attard, a dementia patient, on Christmas Eve in 2022 at his Bexley, Kent residence. The 45-minute ordeal was caught on CCTV footage, showing Olagunju dealing violently with Attard, dragging him across the floor, stripping him, and threatening him.
The footage revealed Olagunju's egregious behavior, including shouting at Attard, pouring marmalade into his coffee despite his diabetes, and ignoring advice not to move him when he fell. Attard pleaded with her, "You are hurting me," while Olagunju responded with threats, "Maybe I will beat you up. I will flog you. I will take you to the GP to get injections".
Attard was found unresponsive the next morning with blood dripping down the side of his face. He was rushed to the hospital but never regained consciousness, dying 10 days later. Although a post-mortem could not confirm direct causation, his family believes the trauma hastened his death.
Olagunju, 42, was sentenced to six weeks in prison, suspended for 18 months, and ordered to complete 50 hours of unpaid work after pleading guilty to one count of ill-treating or wilfully neglecting an individual in her care. The judge, Charlotte Welsh, noted that Olagunju had not received sufficient training and failed to treat Attard with dignity and respect.
Chris Attard, the victim's son, expressed his outrage and disappointment with the sentence, stating that it was an insult and not a sufficient deterrent. He also accused the care agency, Unique Personnel UK, of negligence, saying they should have done their due diligence and provided proper training to Olagunju.
