A Lagos landlady, Mrs. Gloria Unazoi, has denied claims that a recent fire at a fuel station on Old Akute Road in the Obawole area of Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area started from her building. The fire occurred on a Sunday at about 4 pm, after a sudden blast rocked the facility, attracting passers-by and residents around K Farms Estate.
Unazoi's lawyers, Bodunde Bankole and Co, issued a statement on June 26, 2025, clarifying that the fire did not start from her building, which is located behind the filling station. They attributed the fire to the mishandling of the process of discharging premium motor spirit from a tanker into the underground tank at the filling station.
The landlady's lawyers claimed that they had written to the owner of the filling station in 2023, after a similar incident, instructing them to put in place enough safeguards to minimize the effects of a possible fire outbreak. However, the owner failed to comply, leading to the recent fire incident.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service responded promptly to the incident, barricading the entrance to prevent human interference in the rescue operations. The spokesperson for the service, Shakiru Amodu, said that the inferno was immediately curtailed from spreading to adjoining properties.
