The Edo State Police Command has arrested a 32-year-old man named Bassey Nyong Uweh from Akwa Ibom State for allegedly kidnapping and killing his boss, 59-year-old farmer Henry Ohiengbomwan. The incident occurred in Igueze village, located along the Benin-Lagos road in the Ovia North East Local Government Area.
According to the police spokesperson, Moses Yamu, the suspect was part of a five-man gang that kidnapped and murdered the farmer after collecting over N900,000 from the sale of pineapples harvested from the farmer's land. The gang had been hired by the farmer to work on his farm and had helped him sell the harvested pineapples on May 13, 2025.
The police used technology to track and arrest Bassey in a creek at Eyo Abasi village in Oron, Akwa Ibom State. The suspect took the police to the forest where they buried the farmer in a shallow grave. The police are still searching for the other four suspects, who are currently on the run.
The motive behind the kidnapping and murder appears to be robbery and greed. The suspects demanded a ransom of N60 million from the family, but even after the family paid N300,000 to speak with the victim, they were not allowed to do so. The family suspected something was wrong and reported the matter to the police.
