Benue State, Nigeria – Heart-wrenching scenes of devastation have emerged from Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area, where suspected herdsmen launched a brutal attack late Saturday night, killing dozens of residents—including entire families.
Nigerian social commentator and activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), visited the scene and shared harrowing footage revealing the extent of the carnage. According to his account and those of local residents, more than 40 people were killed in a single house, while 15 members of one family were also slaughtered during the rampage.
Survivors Speak: "We Were Left Alone"
In a video posted by VDM on Sunday night, visibly shaken locals described how the attackers stormed their homes after first opening fire at the nearby police station. One resident, his voice trembling with grief, said:
We were indoors because of the rain. Around 10:45 p.m., we heard gunshots at the police station. Then the second group began entering homes, breaking doors and shooting people.
The assault continued for several hours, with the assailants not withdrawing until around 2 a.m. Survivors say there was no external help during the chaos. Despite the presence of a police station nearby, no reinforcements arrived in time to protect the community.
“Children Were Burnt to Ashes”
VDM, who joined protesting youths in Makurdi earlier that day, called the incident one of the most horrifying experiences of his life. In the footage, he stands among the ruins, visibly emotional:
What my eyes have seen, my mouth cannot speak. These are children that were massacred here, burnt to ashes.
Local testimonies also confirm that a pharmacist in the area was among the victims, and his brother reportedly lost 15 family members. Several other households were completely wiped out, with some losing up to five relatives in one night.
Amnesty International: “One of the Deadliest Attacks in Recent Times”
Amnesty International has described the attack as one of the deadliest the state has witnessed in recent years. Though exact casualty figures are still emerging, early estimates suggest well over 100 fatalities, with many victims either burnt alive or gunned down in their homes.
Mounting Calls for Federal Action
The massacre has intensified calls for immediate intervention from the Federal Government and security agencies. Protests led by Benue youths in the state capital over the weekend drew attention to the ongoing violence and displacement caused by persistent attacks from suspected herdsmen.
Community members say they feel abandoned and unprotected, despite years of violence that have turned several parts of the state into killing fields.
Will this be the tragedy that finally prompts decisive government action or just another statistic in Nigeria’s worsening security crisis?
