Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has suspended his Chief Press Secretary, Hon. Ukeyima John UKmoni, indefinitely for participating in the #EndBenueGenocide protest. The suspension was issued through the Office of the Principal Special Assistant on Youth and Media Mobilisation in a letter dated June 15, 2025.
According to the letter, UKmoni's participation in the protest was deemed a "serious breach" of his duties and the trust placed in his office. The governor's office stated that UKmoni was "working against the explicit directives of your Principal"
UKmoni had posted on Facebook about his intention to participate in the protest, stating that he was marching to the Wurukum Roundabout for a peaceful message to "Stop Benue Killings". After receiving the suspension letter, UKmoni accepted the decision and thanked the governor's office for the opportunity to serve.
The #EndBenueGenocide protest was sparked by a wave of brutal violence in Benue State, with Amnesty International reporting over 100 deaths in a recent attack. The attack, which occurred in Yelwata community, saw dozens of people burnt alive and many others shot dead by suspected herdsmen.
