Adriana Smith, a 31-year-old registered nurse from Atlanta, has been laid to rest after spending four months on life support. In February, Smith was certified brain-dead while pregnant, and due to Georgia's restriction on abortion procedures, she was kept alive until her child was brought to term.
Smith had an emergency C-section on June 13 and gave birth to a son, Chance. Despite the baby's expected recovery, Smith passed away on June 17, 2025. Her family and friends mourned her loss at a celebration of life service held at Fairfield Baptist Church in Lithonia Ga.
During the funeral, Smith's family members shared heartfelt tributes to her love, kindness, and wisdom. Her younger sister expressed her gratitude for the time they spent together and hoped that Smith would guide her in making the best decisions.
The case has sparked outrage and highlighted the murkiness of the law. Smith's mother, April Newkirk, shared her grief, saying that her daughter was "breathing through machines for more than 90 days" and that it was "torture" for her to see her daughter in that state.
The case of Adriana Smith raises important questions about the impact of abortion laws on individuals and families.
