A heartbreaking incident has shaken the community after a 9-year-old girl, Silvanna Moreno, died just hours after a dental procedure under general anesthesia. Silvanna, a third-grader at Sherman Elementary School in San Diego, was described as a "bright and joyful" child who brought sunshine to every room she entered.
On March 17, Silvanna underwent a dental procedure at Dreamtime Dentistry in Vista, California, which lasted about three hours. After the procedure, she was taken to a recovery room and later released into her mother's care. However, on the drive home, she fell asleep and failed to wake up, leading to a 911 call and a rushed trip to Rady Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 5:44 pm.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office autopsy report listed the cause of death as methemoglobinemia, a rare condition, in the setting of recent nitrous oxide administration. Contributing factors included the administration of standard anesthesia drugs commonly used in pediatric dental sedation procedures.
Dreamtime Dentistry has stated that they were not aware of Silvanna's fever and illness before the procedure and claim that the patient's mother signed a pre-operative check-in form indicating "NO" when asked if the patient was sick. The dentist, Dr. Ryan Watkins, has expressed condolences to the family and promised a thorough internal review of the case.
Silvanna's family has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for her funeral costs, describing her as a kind, caring, and happy child who was loved by everyone she met. The family and friends are still grappling with the sudden loss of a young life full of promise and joy.
