The Commandant of Amotekun in Oyo State, Colonel Olayinka Olayanju (rtd), has expressed concerns about the inadequacy of resources to combat insecurity in the state. In a recent interview, Olayanju highlighted that Oyo State is as large as Belgium and even bigger than the entire Southeast region, comprising five states.
With only about 2,500 officers, Olayanju emphasized that Amotekun lacks the capacity to effectively secure the state. He also pointed out that the corps is not adequately armed, with most officers carrying pump-action guns that have limited range and power.
Olayanju questioned the ability of Amotekun to protect the state, given the current resources. "What can 2,500 people do?" he asked, highlighting the vastness of the state and the challenges posed by armed bandits.
The Amotekun chief stressed the need for proper weapons and more trained officers to effectively secure Oyo State. He emphasized that without adequate resources, it would be difficult for Amotekun to fulfill its mandate.
