The Odisha government has deferred its decision on releasing Dara Singh, the main convict in the 1999 murder of Australian missionary Graham Stewart Staines and his two minor sons. Despite recommendations from jail and district authorities, the state sentence review board has decided to call for further reports before making a decision.
The decision comes amid speculation that the government is avoiding controversy ahead of the BJP's first anniversary celebrations. Sources claim that the government does not want to spark controversy by releasing Dara Singh, who has been in jail for over 24 years.
Dara Singh, 61, has petitioned the Supreme Court seeking premature release, citing his good behavior and repentance for his actions. He claims to have undergone more than the qualified period of sentence of 14 years and has spent 24 years in actual imprisonment without remission.
Dara Singh was initially sentenced to death by a CBI court in 2003, which was later commuted to life imprisonment by the Orissa High Court. The Supreme Court upheld the life sentence in 2011. His case has sparked debate, with some arguing that he has served enough time, while others believe he should remain behind bars.
