Nigerian Community in South Africa Demands Justice for Murdered Nationals

The Nigerian community in South Africa is outraged over the murder of two Yoruba men, Taiwo Raji and Yemi Akinwunmi, who were shot to death outside their shops in Pretoria on April 20, 2025. The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) has condemned the decision to grant bail to the suspect, a South African national, and is demanding swift justice.

According to NICASA, the attack was carried out in broad daylight, and the suspect allegedly targeted the two men due to racial prejudice against Nigerians. A relative of one of the victims, Babatunde Dosumu, revealed that the accused claimed his phone was stolen at the market and, in a fit of anger, pulled a gun and shot the two men.

In a separate incident, NICASA reported that businessman Silas Ani was abducted from his residence in Johannesburg on April 24, 2025. The suspect allegedly kidnapped Ani along with several others, subjecting them to beatings, abuse, and torture. Ani remains missing, and NICASA has enlisted a legal team to pursue justice.

NICASA President Frank Onyekwelu has urged Nigeria's diplomatic missions in South Africa to intensify efforts on both cases, noting that both the High Commission and consulate had been formally briefed. The case has been postponed for review by a senior judge at the Johannesburg High Court.
