The Nigerian Army has neutralized a top commander of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), Abu Fatima, who had a ₦100 million bounty on his head. The operation took place in Aleru village, Borno State, and resulted in the deaths of two of Fatima's key lieutenants.
According to sources, Fatima was a central figure in coordinating ISWAP's attacks in northern Borno, particularly around Baga. His death is considered a substantial blow to the group's operations in the area. The Nigerian Army recovered motorcycles, AK-47 rifles, and bomb-making materials during the operation.
The elimination of Fatima is significant for communities in Baga, Kukawa, and nearby areas that suffered from attacks orchestrated by his group. His death is comparable to that of former Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau.
This achievement underscores the ongoing success of the Nigerian military's efforts against insurgents in the region. In a related development, over 60 Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists were killed in the past 48 hours when they attempted to infiltrate Damasak, a border town in northern Borno.
