Tensions are reportedly rising within the Lagos chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its powerful Governance Advisory Council (GAC) over the rumoured 2027 governorship ambition of Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
At 39, Seyi is gaining endorsements from youth groups and diaspora communities, including the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders and The Future Platform. These endorsements have intensified speculation, though he has not officially declared any intention to run.
If he enters the race and wins, Seyi would become the youngest governor in Lagos State’s history, surpassing Babatunde Fashola, who was 43 when he assumed office in 2007.
However, the possibility of Seyi’s candidacy has stirred division within the APC. The GAC — a 30-member political powerhouse founded by President Tinubu — is reportedly conflicted, with some seeing the move as controversial and others citing global political dynasties in defense.
Critics argue that Seyi lacks political experience, having never held public office, and worry it may signal political arrogance. Supporters counter that he’s a Nigerian with political rights and strong support among Lagos youth.
Sources also reveal that Seyi may be positioning loyalists for key roles in the upcoming local government elections — a move some residents see as undue influence.
Adding to the tension is the zoning debate. Since Lagos' return to democracy, only candidates from Lagos Island and Epe have governed the state, leaving Ikeja, Ikorodu, and Badagry underrepresented. Some stakeholders believe it’s time the governorship seat rotates to other districts.
Meanwhile, a silent push is reportedly underway for Babajimi Benson, a federal lawmaker from Ikorodu, as an alternative candidate.
While Seyi Tinubu has not made an official declaration, ongoing developments within the APC and endorsements from various groups continue to fuel speculation.
As 2027 approaches, the party remains at a crossroads — between loyalty, legacy, and the demands of equity and public perception.
