Former Vice President Kamala Harris delivered a powerful rebuke of Donald Trump's presidency, accusing him of "wholesale abandonment" of American ideals and citing his first 100 days in office as a period marked by significant economic turmoil.
Speaking to a crowd in her hometown of San Francisco at an event hosted by Emerge America, a group dedicated to training and supporting Democratic women, Harris made her most extensive public comments since conceding the election.
Harris didn't hold back, criticizing Trump's policies as a "self-serving approach" that prioritizes loyalists and those in power, while silencing truth-tellers and neglecting the needs of the broader population. She specifically condemned what she described as Trump creating "the greatest man-made economic crisis in modern presidential history."
"Instead of an administration working to advance America's highest ideals, we are witnessing the wholesale abandonment of those ideals," Harris asserted, speaking just a day after Trump's 100th day in office.
Acknowledging the anxiety and confusion among Democrats following the election, Harris cautioned that the political climate might worsen before it improves. However, she urged her party not to lose hope, emphasizing the importance of courage in the face of fear.
"They are counting on the notion that if they can make some people afraid, it will have a chilling effect on others," she stated. "But what they have overlooked is that fear is not the only thing that’s contagious. Courage is contagious."
As Democrats nationwide grapple with their path forward after losing both the presidency and control of Congress, Harris is increasing her public presence. She is widely considered a strong potential candidate for California governor next year, should she choose to run, and remains a prominent figure in discussions about future presidential contenders.
"I'm not here tonight to offer all the answers," Harris admitted. "But I am here to say this: You are not alone and we are all in this together."
She concluded her speech with a call to action, emphasizing the crucial role of public engagement: "The one check, the one balance, the one power that must not fail is the voice of the people."
