The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has announced a nationwide strike starting June 2, in protest over unpaid wage awards and unimplemented salary increases. The union's National Vice President, Mr. Mustapha Laminu, revealed that judicial staff have not received their five months' wage award, despite other public servants being paid for one month.
The strike is aimed at pressing the government to address three key issues:
1. Payment of five months' arrears of wage award
2. Implementation of the ₦70,000 national minimum wage
3. Implementation of the 25/35% salary increase
Laminu lamented that despite repeated engagements with management, including a 21-day ultimatum and a seven-day notice, the union's demands have not been met. The union had postponed industrial action following the intervention of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, but to no avail.
The union accused the Accountant General of refusing to disburse funds released by the Ministry of Finance to pay the judiciary staff's arrears. Laminu declared, "We will continue this action until and unless the government pays us this money."
The strike is expected to affect all federal courts and judicial institutions across the country, as JUSUN chapter chairmen have been instructed to enforce strict compliance with the service withdrawal order.
