Nasarawa Farmer Devastated as Herdsmen Allegedly Destroy Cassava Farm

Kokona, Nasarawa state. A young farmer in Nasarawa State is counting his losses after his cassava farm was allegedly ravaged by herdsmen. Idris Salisu Danwanzan shared his anguish on Facebook on Wednesday, revealing the shocking state of his once-thriving farm in the Kokona Local Government Area.

Danwanzan, who had not visited his farm in a month, expressed his devastation at the destruction. "You’d be surprised if I told you that it’s my cassava farm. After a month’s visit, this is what I saw.

I can’t even estimate how much I spent," he lamented in his post. He further added a poignant plea for divine retribution, saying, "Any herdsmen responsible for this, Allah sai yasaka mini [may God repay them]."

While the full extent of the damage is yet to be officially determined, Danwanzan indicated a significant investment of both time and money in cultivating the now-destroyed farm.

This incident underscores the escalating tensions between farmers and herders in Nigeria, particularly in the Middle Belt region, where conflicts over land resources have become increasingly frequent.

Tragically, a separate but related incident in Akpam Village 2, Karu Local Government Area of the same state, resulted in the deaths of two young men, aged 23 and 24. Reports suggest they were attacked by suspected Fulani herdsmen after attempting to stop cattle from feeding on mango tree leaves near their residence. The confrontation reportedly turned violent, leading to a fatal knife attack.

These incidents highlight the urgent need for peaceful resolutions and effective strategies to address the ongoing conflicts between farmers and herders in Nasarawa State and across Nigeria.
