Boko Haram terrorists have killed 18 fishermen and left scores missing in a brutal attack on Sunday in Mobbar local government area of Borno State. The attack occurred around 2:30 pm at the Fadana-Garuwa River, where dozens of terrorists on motorcycles targeted the fishermen.
According to eyewitnesses, the terrorists accused the fishermen of leaking sensitive information to their rivals, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) faction. The fishermen had been granted access to fishing in the river by ISWAP, to whom they paid a form of tax.
The attack is believed to be a retaliation by Boko Haram, which controls the riverine area in Niger Republic. The rivalry between the two terrorist groups has intensified in recent months, with both factions rampaging on civilians and military targets in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states.
The bodies of the 18 victims were recovered, and many people are still missing. The villagers conducted burial rites on Tuesday in accordance with Islamic rites.
