The body of Ukrainian journalist Viktoria Roshchyna has been returned home from Russia in a shocking state, sparking widespread outrage and condemnation. According to an international investigation, Roshchyna's body was repatriated to Kyiv in February without her eyes or brain, with evidence of torture and mutilation.
The investigation revealed that Roshchyna's body was handed back in a badly labeled "unidentified male" package as part of an exchange with Russia. DNA tests later confirmed that the body belonged to the missing journalist. Forensic experts found that Roshchyna's eyeballs, brain, and part of her throat had been removed, and her head was shaved with a tag bearing her last name attached to her shin.
Medical examiners also found that Roshchyna had a broken rib and possible traces of electric shock. Her feet were covered in burn marks, and her neck was bruised. The investigation suggests that Roshchyna was subjected to inhumane treatment during her captivity in Russia.
Roshchyna, a 27-year-old journalist, was detained while reporting on claims that Russia was operating a network of unofficial detention centers. She was held incommunicado in various prisons, including the notorious Taganrog SIZO-2 prison in Rostov, known as Russia's Guantanamo.
