Tragedy Strikes After Discount Weight-Loss Surgery in Mexico

A 53-year-old mother of one, Lisa Roemeling, has died after complications arose from a gastric bypass surgery she underwent in Mexico. The surgery, which was organized by a medical tourism company, cost around $7,000, significantly less than the $30,000 it would have cost in the US.

Roemeling, who ran a pizzeria with her husband in Minnesota, traveled to Tijuana with her cousin, Jenny Poppo, for the surgery. However, things took a tragic turn when she suffered internal bleeding and sepsis, leading to cardiac arrest that left her brain dead. Despite being transferred to a hospital in San Diego, her condition did not improve, and her husband was forced to take her off life support.

Poppo has spoken out about the horrific experience, criticizing the clinic for lacking necessary equipment and staff who could communicate in English. The medical tourism company sent an email apologizing for Roemeling's death but warned against speaking out. Poppo described the surgery as a "circus act" and expressed her outrage at the clinic's handling of the situation.

Roemeling's family has paid tribute to her memory, describing her as a kind and generous person who touched many lives. Her son, Austin Roemeling, mourned her loss online, saying, "It pains me that my son will have to grow up without seeing his grandma." Despite the tragic circumstances of her death, her family finds solace in the time she spent with her newborn grandchild before passing away.
