A tragic case of mistaken identity has left a community in shock after two Texas teenagers allegedly killed the wrong man in a botched revenge attack. Fernando Amaya and Christopher Portillo Luna, both 17, have been charged with murder and other crimes in connection with the death of 41-year-old Marcos Cotto Torres.
According to Houston police, the teens targeted the apartment of a perceived romantic rival, believing Amaya's girlfriend was cheating on him. However, they fired a hail of bullets at the wrong apartment, killing Cotto Torres and injuring another person.
The incident occurred on March 18, when police responded to a report of a person down at an apartment complex in west Houston. Upon arrival, they found two men shot, with Cotto Torres pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim was taken to the hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to the buttocks.
An investigation revealed that Amaya's girlfriend was indeed cheating on him, but with a different man who lived in the apartment and escaped uninjured. The girlfriend told detectives that Amaya had threatened to shoot up the apartment and then kill himself.
Surveillance video showed the suspects fleeing in a white SUV, which belonged to a family member. Police found 84 spent shell casings from an AK-style rifle at the scene.
Amaya was arrested hours after the shooting, while Portillo Luna was taken into custody on Thursday. Both teens are being held on bonds of over $1 million, with their next court date scheduled for April 29.
