Farmers in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State are sounding the alarm over the devastating destruction of their farmlands by suspected herdsmen. The farmers, who are struggling to make ends meet, are begging the government for urgent intervention to protect their livelihoods and safety.
According to a report by News Central TV, the farmers' crops are being trampled and eaten by cattle, leaving them in dire economic conditions. The situation is further complicated by the fact that some farmers have been threatened with firearms when they try to resist the destruction of their farmlands.
One distressed farmer pleaded, "Only God can save us. We are praying, we are begging the government to come and rescue us. Help and save us from Fulani herdsmen." The farmer added, "They don't allow us to rest, they don't allow us to eat. When we farm, they come with their cows and eat our crops. When we shout at them, they will use guns to pursue us."
This incident is the latest in a series of clashes between farmers and herdsmen in Nigeria, which have resulted in economic losses, displacement, and violence. Despite repeated complaints, residents claim that the authorities have not done enough to protect them.
Community leaders in Oyigbo are urging both the state and federal governments to step in and provide stronger security measures and policies to protect farmlands from destruction. As food security concerns rise, affected farmers fear for their livelihoods and safety, hoping that their pleas will not go unanswered.
The Nigerian government has faced criticism for its handling of the farmer-herder conflict, which has been ongoing for years. The situation highlights the need for effective policies and measures to address the root causes of the conflict and ensure the safety and livelihoods of farmers and herders alike.
