Governor Ron DeSantis has signed the death warrant for Edward James, with the execution set for March 20 at 6 p.m. |
The Crime
In September 1993, James, who was renting a room in Betty Dick’s home, attacked the family after a night of heavy drinking. He strangled and sexually assaulted Toni before killing her. He then stabbed her grandmother more than 20 times. James fled the scene but was arrested weeks later in California.
Legal Battle and Execution
James pleaded guilty in 1995 and was sentenced to death. In his final appeal, his lawyers argued that he suffered from cognitive decline, but courts at both the state and federal levels denied the request. His execution marks Florida’s second this year, fueling ongoing debates over capital punishment.
