The Columbine community is rallying around the family of Karissa Rund, a 40-year-old survivor of the 1999 school shooting, who tragically lost her battle with stage 4 colon cancer on March 3.
Karissa's life was marked by resilience and courage in the face of adversity. She survived the horrific school shooting that claimed the lives of 12 students and injured over 20 others. Her experience that day would stay with her forever, but it did not define her.
Years later, Karissa would face another daunting challenge: cancer. Diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer, she embarked on a 10-year battle against the disease. Despite the ups and downs, Karissa remained a beacon of hope and inspiration to those around her.
Tragedy struck Karissa again in 2004 when her first husband, Greg Rund, a Marine and her high school sweetheart, was killed in combat in Iraq. She later found love again with Doug Rund, Greg's brother.
Doug and Karissa's love story is one of selflessness and devotion. As Karissa battled cancer, Doug cared for her every need, attending to even the smallest details. Their friends and family have been inspired by their love and commitment to each other.
Karissa's legacy extends far beyond her own story. She was an encourager, a spreader of hope, and a shining light in times of darkness. Her impact on those around her will be deeply felt.
As the Columbine community comes together to mourn Karissa's passing, they also celebrate her life, her strength, and her unwavering spirit.
