Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has showered praise on Super Eagles fullback Bright Osayi Samuel following his impressive performances for Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Osayi Samuel was an integral part of the Super Eagles squad that finished third at the tournament, securing the bronze medal after defeating Egypt 4 2 on penalties in the third place match. Throughout the competition, the defender stood out for his energy, discipline, and versatility, contributing effectively in defence while also pushing forward to support attacking moves.
Nigeria were widely regarded as one of the most aggressive and well organised teams at the tournament, and Osayi Samuel’s performances at right back played a key role in that success. His work rate, pace, and ability to transition quickly from defence to attack earned him praise from fans and analysts alike.
Speaking during his pre match press conference ahead of Birmingham City’s next league fixture, Davies expressed his admiration for the Nigerian international, despite the Super Eagles narrowly missing out on the AFCON title.
“He’s back, which is good news, and I congratulated him on his performances and Nigeria for making it to the tournament,” Davies told reporters.
“Although they didn’t win the competition, they made the country proud, and Bright really enjoyed being part of that experience, so we’re happy to have him back.”
Osayi Samuel was substituted during the second half of the third place match against Egypt after sustaining a hamstring injury, a development that sparked concerns over his fitness and availability for Birmingham City’s upcoming game at St Andrew’s Stadium.
However, Davies has since provided a positive update, confirming that the 28 year old has been assessed by the club’s medical staff and is fit to return to action.
“He is available. There was a little issue, but we’ve had him checked out and he’s trained today, so he’s okay,” the Birmingham City manager added.
Osayi Samuel has been a regular figure in Birmingham City’s squad this season, featuring in the club’s last nine matches across competitions. With his confidence boosted following his AFCON outing, the defender will be eager to maintain his strong form and help the Blues secure a positive result when they face Stoke City on Saturday.
